Title: "The Fall Guy "
.....A Greenman for Autumn

Note: I finished this jug on Sept. 22, 2009 (the first day of Fall)

Comment : The jug is hand-thrown stoneware. the leaves were made by pressing leaves from the old Oak tree and maple tree, growing outside of the studio, into clay slabs then forming the slabs into a face. He is glazed with my Washita River slip and ash glaze. He's smiling a big old smile because Fall is finally here.

The Green Man motif has many variations. Found in many cultures around the world, the Green Man is often related to natural vegetative deities springing up in different cultures throughout the ages. Primarily it is interpreted as a symbol of the cycles of life. Some speculate that the mythology of the Green Man developed independently in the traditions of separate ancient cultures and evolved into the wide variety of examples found throughout history.

The Jug: He is hand turned on the wheel and sculpted from stoneware clay . The glazes came out really nice. My Washita River slip and ash glaze over red is spectacular. The insides of my jugs are always glazed with food safe, lead free glazes. He is high fired and fully functional.

Size: He's a large. He stands about 12" tall and about 9 " wide.

and glaze .

Materials and process: Hand-thrown and sculpted clay , and high fire glaze .
